How to Play Shorthand
Poker is a very difficult card game of strategy and skill and some luck is also involved. You get various types of poker like Omaha high, Texas hold’em, Seven Card Stud, and more. In each of those games you get different formats that are used so each player can choose what type of game they want. For example, Shorthand Texas hold’em only has 6 players or less. This game is not for passive players.
By passive, we are referring to the types of styles players use when they play. In hold’em you get passive players and passive loose players who do not bet unless they have a good hand. They often sit on the sideline for most of the game. They rarely take chances with an average hand, even though they could get lucky on the flop. Then on the opposite end of the scale you get aggressive players and tight aggressive players. These players will play frequently and bet even if they do not have good hands, just to see how they go. In Shorthand hold’em aggressive players are better and it will be good to look for a table with limpers.
The actual rules of the Shorthand game are the same as for any hold’em poker game. Each player is dealt two face-down cards called hole cards. These will only be seen by him for the entire game and will only be revealed to another player if called to a showdown on the river. The first round will consist of betting and raising or folding. Then the dealer will put out three community cards called the flop. Each player can now see better where they lie in terms of creating a good poker hand. More betting will occur and then the next card will be put down called the turn card. There will be more betting and then the final card will be placed down, called the river card.
From the seven cards, the players must be able to make a poker hand like a flush, straight, full house, three of a kind, or a pair. The highest hand will win the pot of money that has been accumulated during the betting rounds. Shorthand poker is a faster paced game and it will be easier for other players to read you and for you to read them. You can also use other poker strategies like bluffing or semi bluffing. Bluffing does only work in lower limit games, but you can try once in your game. A semi bluff is far more profitable as you will bet if you could potentially make a hand, but haven’t yet. If you make the hand then you are not bluffing anymore, but if you miss then your opponent will still think you have the hand.
With Shorthand poker you can see that the game is technically the same as longhand poker with more players at the table, but then consider the fact that with a deck of 52 cards, four of each denomination and the same amount of possibilities, you are more likely to get more players with good hands in the Shorthand game which can make the pots higher and the showdown very interesting indeed.
